Colorado Two-Week Road Trip
A classic Colorado loop through Denver, Rocky Mountain National Park, the Million Dollar Highway, Mesa Verde, the San Juans, and the Front Range — paced for first-time visitors.
Overview
Colorado rewards a loop itinerary that avoids backtracking and builds in altitude acclimatization. The classic shape starts and ends in Denver, loops through Rocky Mountain National Park, heads west across the high passes to the San Juan Mountains, cuts through southwestern Colorado to Mesa Verde, then returns north via the Arkansas River valley and the Front Range.
Suggested Route
Days 1-2: Denver
Start in Denver. Give yourself two days to adjust to the altitude before heading into the mountains. Explore Union Station, RiNo, the Denver Art Museum, and the craft beer scene. Do a light hike in nearby Golden or Boulder rather than heading straight to 14,000 feet.
Days 3-4: Rocky Mountain National Park
Drive north to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. Drive Trail Ridge Road (the highest continuous paved road in the US) and take one day hike — Bear Lake to Nymph/Dream/Emerald Lakes is a classic. Book timed entry permits in advance.
Days 5-6: Summit County
Cross the Continental Divide via Berthoud Pass or Trail Ridge Road and settle in Breckenridge or Frisco. Acclimatization should be better now. Try a moderate 14er like Quandary Peak or ride the Gondola for panoramic views.
Days 7-8: Aspen and Maroon Bells
Drive Independence Pass (open summer only) to Aspen. Visit Maroon Bells in the early morning for the classic reflection photo. Consider a day hike on the Four Pass Loop or Cathedral Lake trail.
Days 9-10: The San Juan Mountains
Drive south to the San Juan Mountains, taking the Million Dollar Highway (US-550) from Ouray to Silverton to Durango. Hike Ice Lakes or Blue Lakes. Ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
Day 11: Mesa Verde National Park
From Durango, visit Mesa Verde National Park. Book Cliff Palace or Balcony House tour tickets in advance. Stay overnight in Cortez or return to Durango.
Days 12-13: Great Sand Dunes and the Arkansas Valley
Head east across Wolf Creek Pass to Great Sand Dunes National Park. Sandboard the dunes in the morning, then drive north through the San Luis Valley to Salida or Buena Vista. Hot springs options abound.
Day 14: Return to Denver
Drive back to Denver via US-24/US-285 through South Park and the Front Range foothills. Allow time for a final meal, souvenir run, and airport buffer.
Tips
- Acclimatize: do not hike above 12,000 feet on day one.
- Start hikes before 6 AM to avoid afternoon thunderstorms.
- Book lodging early — summer is peak season everywhere.
- Carry cash for trailhead parking and small-town purchases.
