Quandary Peak's East Ridge is the recommended first 14er for many hikers because of its straightforward trail, continuous switchbacks, and relative proximity to Denver and Summit County. The route is 6.7 miles round trip with 3,450 feet of elevation gain. The trailhead is on the Blue Lakes Road just south of Breckenridge. The path climbs consistently through forest and tundra with no significant route-finding required. The summit provides expansive views of the Tenmile and Mosquito ranges. Like all fourteeners, afternoon thunderstorms are a serious hazard, and an early start is essential.
