About this place

Durango is one of southwestern Colorado's main travel hubs, with a historic downtown on the Animas River that serves as a base for recreation, train excursions, and road trips. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad runs steam and diesel trains along the Animas River through the San Juan National Forest to Silverton. The Million Dollar Highway (US-550 from Durango to Ouray) is one of the most scenic drives in the United States, with dramatic cliffside sections, views of Engineer Mountain and the Grenadiers, and the historic mining towns of Silverton and Ouray. Durango also offers mountain biking on the nearby Hermosa Creek Trail system and is the largest city near Mesa Verde National Park.
