Maroon Bells Scenic Area requires a reservation and shuttle during peak season. Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness has self-issue permits for overnight use.
The Elk Mountains rise steeply from the Roaring Fork and Crystal River valleys, creating some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Colorado. Aspen sits at their southern edge, while the towns of Carbondale, Redstone, and Marble are small entry points on the western side. Maroon Bells and the nearby Snowmass Mountain, Capitol Peak, and the Cathedral peaks define the skyline. The Four Pass Loop is the premier multi-day backpacking route in the range, and numerous day-hikes ascend to high alpine lakes and passes. The historic Crystal Mill is one of Colorado's most photographed backcountry structures.
