Trail Weather

The Four Pass Loop is one of North America's most celebrated backpacking routes. The loop starts and ends at the Maroon Lake trailhead near Aspen and crosses four passes at or above 12,000 feet: Buckskin Pass (12,500 ft), Trail Rider Pass (12,420 ft), Frigid Air Pass (12,400 ft), and West Maroon Pass (12,500 ft). The route passes through the heart of the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness with views of the Maroon Bells, Snowmass Mountain, and Capitol Peak. The typical itinerary is 3-5 days covering 26 miles. Permits and bear canisters are required. The window for dry snow-free travel is short — typically late July through September.
