Snowmass Mountain rises above Snowmass Lake in the Maroon Bells–Snowmass Wilderness and is named for the persistent snowfield on its eastern flank. It is one of the most remote 14ers in Colorado — the standard approach is an 8-mile hike to a basecamp at Snowmass Lake, followed by a Class 3 climb up the East Slopes the next morning. Total round-trip distance from the Snowmass Creek Trailhead is roughly 22 miles with 5,800 feet of gain. The mountain is part of a classic backpacking 14er trifecta with Capitol Peak and Pyramid Peak. Permits are required for overnight stays in the wilderness.
