Quandary Peak is widely recommended as a first 14er because of its straightforward East Ridge trail, continuous path to the summit, and proximity to the Front Range and Summit County. The trail is 6.7 miles round trip with 3,450 feet of elevation gain. While the route is non-technical in summer, it is still a strenuous alpine hike with altitude above 14,000 feet. The summit provides broad views of the Tenmile Range, the Mosquito Range, and the Continental Divide. The trailhead is off the Blue Lakes Road south of Breckenridge. Hikers should start early (before 6 AM) to avoid afternoon thunderstorms.
