Mountain Weather

Mount Sneffels (14,154 ft) is one of the most visually striking fourteeners in the San Juan Mountains, with a distinctive pyramidal summit visible from the Million Dollar Highway. The standard route via the South Slopes approaches through Yankee Boy Basin, one of Colorado's most famous wildflower areas, and then crosses the Lavender Col before a Class 3 scramble to the summit. The peak is named after the Snaefellsjökull volcano in Iceland, which appears in Jules Verne's 'Journey to the Center of the Earth.' The surrounding Yankee Boy Basin and Ice Lakes Basin are major hiking destinations in their own right, known for alpine lakes and dramatic mountain scenery.
