Mount Princeton dominates the Arkansas Valley between Buena Vista and Salida and is one of three Collegiate Peaks (with Yale and Harvard) named after Ivy League universities by the Harvard Mining Company expedition of 1869. The standard East Slopes route gains 5,400 feet over 13 miles round trip on rough talus, much of it on a 4WD road that climbers can drive partway up. The peak is closely linked to the Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort at its base — a popular post-summit soak. The Collegiate Peaks Wilderness protects the alpine portions of the range.
