Mount Elbert is the tallest peak in the Rocky Mountains of North America and the second-highest in the contiguous United States (after Mount Whitney). The standard route via the Colorado or Northeast Ridge is a non-technical but physically demanding trail run, hike, or climb that gains approximately 4,700 feet. Most parties start well before sunrise from the North Elbert Trailhead near Twin Lakes and summit in 6 to 10 hours round trip. No technical gear is required outside of early-season snow, but altitude, weather, and afternoon thunderstorms demand respect. The summit offers panoramic views of the Sawatch Range and the Arkansas River Valley.
