Mount Blue Sky (renamed in 2023 from Mount Evans by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to honor the Cheyenne and Arapaho peoples) is distinctive among Colorado's fourteeners because the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway — the highest paved road in North America — climbs to 14,130 feet at Summit Lake, leaving a short Class 2 hike to the true summit at 14,265 feet. The road opens seasonally and passes through the Mount Blue Sky Wilderness, where mountain goats and bighorn sheep are commonly seen along the roadside. The summit area includes the ruins of the Crest House and a stone shelter built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The peak is also a popular area for mountaineering, with several alpine routes and a west ridge Class 3 scramble.
