Maroon Bells refers to the twin peaks Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak, both fourteiners in the Elk Mountains near Aspen. Together with the foreground Maroon Lake, this forms the single most photographed alpine scene in Colorado and one of the most recognizable mountain images in the United States. The standard climbing routes on both peaks are Class 4 with loose rock and require mountaineering experience. Most visitors access the site via a shuttle from Aspen during peak season (late May through October). The Maroon Lake trail is an easy 1-mile walk, while longer routes ascend to Crater Lake or up toward Buckskin Pass for experienced hikers.
