Capitol Peak
4,307m
Widely considered the most dangerous fourteener in Colorado — a Class 4 climb across the infamous Knife Edge ridge in the Elk Mountains near Aspen.
Mountain Weather

Capitol Peak is one of Colorado's most technically demanding 14ers and has the highest fatality rate among the standard 14er routes. The Northeast Ridge route requires a long approach to Capitol Lake (6.5 miles), a 700-foot scramble up to K2, and the airy Knife Edge — a 100-foot section of ridge with thousand-foot drops on either side that must be straddled or carefully traversed on hands and feet. The remaining climb to the summit is sustained Class 4 over loose rock. Most parties make it a 2-day trip with a basecamp at Capitol Lake. Helmets, mountaineering experience, and stable weather are non-negotiable.
